Day 92: It looks like a muffin but it’s not!

Another version of the ‘salted cake’. Same base as on Day 84 but with different filling and I bake it in a muffin shape, it’s handy for the lunchbox.

Une autre version du cake salé, sur la même base que le jour 84. Toujours aussi bon. J’utilise mes moules à muffin parce que c’est joli et très pratique.

I like crepes, the kids too. They’re easy to make and can be kept for a couple days (well packed and refrigerated). I had made a big batch the night before, it was very handy for this morning lunchbox. You can find some nice recipes here, here and here. There is one thing that I want to add: in my family we often add a little bit of cidre (French cider or alcoholic cider) or even beer to the batter. The crepes then seem to be even fluffier and lighter, it is so good.

J’aime beaucoup les crêpes et les enfants aussi. C’est facile à faire, cela se garde quelques jours au frais et c’est tellement bon. J’en avais préparé beaucoup la veille et du coup c’était bien pratique ce matin pour préparer la boite à lunch. Vous pouvez trouver des recettes ici et ici. Dans notre famille nous aimons particulièrement les crêpes à la bière ou au cidre, cela les rend tellement légères.

My kids love pasta and I guess it’s fairly common. A pasta salad is always easy to prepare and I know the kids will love it. So, here I was, 7 am in the morning, waking up and wondering what I was going to do for the lunchboxes. This was one of those days where I really, really, had to push myself to prepare lunchboxes. I did not grew up with lunchboxes and, seriously, I think to have to prepare lunchboxes every day is a pain in…(you know what I mean) sometimes.. As for today, I knew I had leftovers pasta and beef from diner. I decided to use this as a base for a salad and then I included pretty much every vegetables I still had in my fridge/freezer that could be added: peel carrots, shred cabbage, microwave – on fast – frozen green beans, cut the cheese (and I am just writing about food here!), add home-made vinaigrette… voila: a salad for lunch!

Mes enfants adorent les pâtes. Je sais, c’est assez commun, mais c’est pratique. Donc, me voilà ce matin, au sortir du lit, à me demander ce que j’allais faire pour les boites à lunch. Enfin sérieusement, ça vous amuse de vous demander tous les matins ce que vous allez faire pour les boites à lunch? Moi, pas toujours. Je savais qu’il restait des pâtes et du bœuf du diner d’hier, alors j’ai attrapé légumes et autres choses disponibles sous la main et voilà: une salade de pâtes pour le déjeuner. Ouf!

My sister-in law was visiting from Mexico and she cooked the best chili con carne ever! The kids loved it and here we go, great leftovers for lunch.

My kids always like eggs. Whatever way I cook them. Their favorite dinner includes soft boiled eggs with buttered bread sticks to dip in it! This lunchbox was easy to prepare, not the fanciest one but a winner still!

Mes enfants adorent les œufs. Peu importe la manière dont ils sont préparés. Leur diner favori c’est des œufs à la coque avec des mouillettes… Ah le bonheur! Cette boite à lunch a été un succès, pourtant elle est simple.

I know it is not the kiwi season… but my kids love it. I usually really try to stick to my rule of local, seasonal, organic produces as much as possible. I guess the kids were getting tired of apples and apple sauces, sometimes winter seem to last and last and last! I tried to make my kids happy. :)

Je sais que les kiwis ne sont pas vraiment de saison…mais mes enfants les adorent. J’essaie, en général et dans la mesure du possible, de n’utiliser que des produits locaux, bio et de saison. Que puis-je dire: les enfants ne pouvaient plus voir en peinture les pommes et les compotes de pommes, parfois l’hiver c’est long! Alors, j’ai voulu leur faire plaisir.

A ‘salted cake’ is a very typical dish in France. Practical to eat and easy recipe, it is very often served cold with a salad. It can be prepared in advance. It is the perfect dish for a crowd, picnic or buffet style lunch or dinner. It can take so many flavors, based on taste and season. It’s pretty much always the same base, just different main ingredients. A kind of variation on a muffin base, but salted. Check out the NYTimes article about it here and recipe here. I also like the recipe I referenced in the menu for the simple “base” explanation and flavoring options!
